Ritual Tools

Yes believe it or not some of us trads will use "ritual" tools when performing our crafting. Not all of us call them ritual tools however. I don't; I do not perform rituals, so why should I call them ritual tools? They are just certain items I use for my day-to-day work and my magical workings. They are:

  • Scissors
  • Trowel
  • Pocket knife
  • Watering can

I know what you are thinking; those are just regular, everyday objects. How the hell can they be witchy? I never said they were "witchy" and yeah they are anything but "witchy". But they are seriously the only tools I absolutely need. I can't get through life without my scissors because they cut paper, ribbon, string, fabric and clip coupons. My trowel makes holes for my plants to go into and is good for threatening the dogs when they try to eat my newly planted plants. My pocket knife is an abso-fucking-lutely must have; I'm an avid hunter so I need damn good knives when I am out and its also great for protection, repairs, camping and cutting ttems or limbs when out foraging. And lastly, who doesn't need a watering can? You water your plants with it. Don't have plants? Just buy one anyway just to say you have one.

Seriously though, I do have some magical tools that I use when practicing my craft. The above list was just to get you to realize that even everyday mundane shit can be used by trad witches in their work. You don't need the bone handled athame (how do you even pronounce that?), the canalope sized crystal ball, the crushed-velvet robe, the 100 year old satin crimson ribbon or even a Ron Weasely replica wand. Trads use what is available to them because it makes more sense than to break the bank buying useless garbage because some book or New-Age dude at the local Pagan Store tells you to. But there are some tools trads will use that many of the Wiccans and Pagans do as well:

  • Bull roarer; my favorite "witchy" tool and play-toy. Make your own by going here
  • Crystals; yes, even I use crystals. My favorite are the geodes my dad I collected when I was a kid
  • Incense; smells can really help you focus and stay relaxed while doing spell work
  • Candles; when used with incense, they certainly make you feel like a "witch" (or at least like the modern stereotypical witch)
  • Skulls and Bones; these can really help you connect with your familiar or animal guide if you have one
  • Stang; just cause they are cool looking and is a great walking stick
  • Bowls, Plates and Cauldrons; I use these to hold things, especially incense ashes

So are you a witch even if you do not have one or any of these tools? Yes. The tools are not what define the witch, it is the witch that defines the witch. It is rare I use my stang for anything but a walking stick. It is rare I use my crystals, incense and candles. I use my bull roarer all the time but mostly because it makes one hell of a wicked noise. I made it myself, and have only used it probably twice for actual spellcraft. And I am still a witch. I want to add a bell to my collection, but I have yet to come across the right one. Maybe I will, maybe I won't ever. Use the tools that feel right to you.
Altar Spaces

I am a witch, and I do not have an alter. Well, I don't have a "typical" alter. I have a small TV cart that my fox skull (that is why I am the Cunning Fox folks, it was my first skull), my deer shed antler and my witch's jar sit on. But that is shared with my small collection of ball-jointed dolls so it's not a real alter. But then what is a real alter? Is it a table or mantle set up with only magical tools and objects? Can I consider my three dolls magical objects in a way because they represent three sides of my personality? That is up to ME and it is also up to YOU how an alter is viewed.

Yes I plan to set up a small table one day where all my cunning tools and objects are housed. It will be a place where I can truly tune into my inner witch and focus solely on my inner witch and my magical workings. When I finally do, I probably won't even call it an alter. Personally I find the word alter to refer to a place of worship to a deity. As an atheist, I'll most likely refer to it as my cunning table or cunning space. You can call yours (if you decide to have one or six) whatever you want to call it.
